Mathavan Arumugham achieved the rank of Eagle Scout on January 30, 2024. His BSA Scouting journey began in 2017 when he joined Troop 359 in San Marino, CA. He credits scouting as developing his deep understanding of community, his knowledge of essential life skills, and his development as a leader. Mathavan completed National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) and has served in numerous leadership roles during his journey including Patrol Leader, Bugler, Quartermaster, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, and finally as the Senior Patrol Leader responsible for developing a vision and plan for the troop and putting it into action.
Mathavan attains the rank of Eagle Scout having achieved 21 merit badges, 24 camping nights, and 54 hiking miles. His most memorable troop outings were kayaking through sea caves in the Channel Islands and whitewater rafting down the Kern River.
Mathavan completed his Eagle Scout service project with Villa Esperanza Services, a nonprofit organization supporting individuals with intellectual and development disabilities, which entailed designing and constructing planter boxes for teaching gardening skills. He led a group of 10 volunteers over five days and logged a total of 143 total volunteer hours.
Mathavan graduated from High School in 2024, and will then embark on his academic pursuits in college where he will pursue mechanical and aerospace engineering and computer science.
Tony Dun achieved the rank of Eagle Scout on August 20th, 2024, with the Greater Los Angeles Area Council, Rose Bowl District, Troop 359 in San Marino. Tony began his scouting journey in 2018, taking on leadership roles such as quartermaster, patrol leader, and assistant patrol leader. He earned 21 merit badges, completed 24 camp nights, and dedicated 49 service hours.
For his Eagle project, Tony created 200 Patient Get Well Kits for Kaiser Permanente’s Los Angeles Medical Center with the help of volunteers, including fellow scouts and friends. These kits were designed to comfort and encourage patients on their recovery journey, demonstrating that they are not alone and that their community cares about their well-being. Each kit included comfortable fuzzy socks, soothing teas, body care products, snacks, sweets, and heartfelt notes of encouragement. The project was a great success, bringing the patients both practical support and a sense of companionship.
Tony’s favorite scouting experience is the 2024 Camporee, where he and fellow scout Justin, the only older scouts on the trip, took on leading younger scouts through various team activities. A particularly memorable moment was when Tony's dish, a teriyaki chicken rice bowl representing Troop 359, won first place in the cooking contest. Outside of scouting, Tony serves as the vice president of the Cooking for Community club at his school, where he helps host events and prepares meals to donate to local hospitals, including Huntington Hospital and the San Marino Police Department. Additionally, he volunteers in the Huntington Hospital surgical department, assisting with deliveries and patient discharge.
Justin Lin achieved the rank of Eagle Scout on 02/06/24 with the Greater Los Angeles Area Council, Rose Bowl District, Troop 359 San Marino. His scouting journey began in 2017 as a Webelos at Cub Scout Pack 361, where he earned the Arrow of Light Award before joining BSA Troop 359 in 2018. He has also held various other leadership roles, including Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Scribe, Instructor, and Troop Guide. Justin has attained 36 merit badges, 37 camp nights, and 82 service hours, also earned the World Conservation and National Outdoor Camping Awards.
In June 2023, Justin completed his Eagle Project, a conservation-focused initiative at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino, CA. Utilizing geographical information systems (GIS), Justin created an interactive map plotting 200 trees at the gardens. Each point on the map includes specific information about the tree, primarily measurements. This project is part of a larger effort to map every tree at the Huntington Gardens, with results being utilized by conservation researchers at the gardens. Beyond scouting, Justin is actively involved in speech and debate, medical research, and student government.
Benjamin Miller achieved the rank of Eagle Scout on 03/18/2024 with Greater Los Angeles Area Council, Rose Bowl District, Troop 359 in San Marino, CA. Benjamin started his scouting journey in 2013 as a Cub Scout in Pack 354. He joined BSA Troop 359 in 2018 and has served in various leadership roles including Patrol Leader, Chaplain Aide, Instructor, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, and Den Chief. He has earned 23 merit badges, 30 camping nights, and a total of 60 community service hours.
Benjamin’s Eagle Project entailed constructing and installing a solar-powered water fountain in the community garden at the San Marino Community Church. His most memorable scouting experience was kayaking through sea caves at Santa Cruz Island, Channel Islands. Outside of Scouts, Benjamin enjoys skiing, volleyball, speech and debate, playing electric guitar, and sings in the high school honor choir. In 2023, Benjamin accompanied the high school choir to France where they sang at the Eiffel Tower, Meaux Cathedral, and Vaux Le Vicomte, a chateau outside of Paris.
Bradley Wong achieved Eagle Rank on 04/02/24 with Greater Los Angeles Area Council, Rose Bowl District, Troop 359 San Marino. Bradley started his scouting journey in 2019 with BSA Troop 359. He has held various leadership positions over the years including Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, & Chaplain Aide. Bradley earned 26 merit badges, 26 camp nights, and has served 83 service hours.
Bradley completed his Eagle Project on December 2, 2023. In the winter of 2022, when San Marino was enduring lots of rain and wind, a large tree fell over at Lacy Park, which opened up a patch of dirt that didn't fit with the park’s aesthetic. Bradley led 17 scouts to rejuvenate and beautify this barren piece of land by implementing 45 drought-resistant California Native plants that the San Marino community can enjoy for years to come. One of Bradley’s favorite scouting memories is the Troop 359 Death Valley campout in January 2020, where he and other scouts ran through canyons, tasted part of the salt basin, and made delicious food. Outside of scouting, Bradley loves to draw, sing, play games like Minecraft and Celeste, listen to musicals, and hang out with friends and family. He is involved with his school’s theater program, playing a lead role in two shows, sings in liturgy choir, and participates in Pre-Med club. Bradley attended the Devil Pups camp during summer 2023, is currently learning Jiu Jitsu and Capoeira, and volunteers at Huntington Hospital. Bradley is extremely grateful for all of the skills and friends he has gained from scouting
Tyler Young earned the rank of Eagle Scout on June 25, 2024, with Troop 359 San Marino, Rosebowl District, Greater Los Angeles Area Council. His 11-year scouting journey began in 2013 as a Tiger with Cub Scout Pack 361, where he earned the Arrow of Light before joining BSA Troop 359 in 2018. Tyler currently serves as Junior Assistant Scoutmaster and held various leadership roles, including, Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Troop Guide, Troop Instructor, Patrol Leader, and Chaplain’s Aide. He has 59 camp nights, 55 merit badges earning two silver & two bronze Eagle Palms, and 155 service hours.
For his Eagle Project, Tyler assembled patient information resource kits for breast cancer patients at City of Hope Hospital, distributed QR codes to expand the AYA (Adolescent Young Adult) Community Toolkits' digital reach, and fundraised $3,600 for the AYA Community.
His favorite camping trips included whitewater rafting on the Kern River, fishing at Lake Gregory, and building underwater drones at Camp Emerald Bay. Memorable merit badges were Wilderness Survival, where he built a fort and spent the night in the mountains, and Fishing, where he learned to catch, gut, and cook a fish. Tyler completed the acclaimed National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) program and also received the Environmental Protection Award and National Outdoor Camping Awards.
A High School senior, Tyler plans to study aerospace engineering. He is active in student government, clubs, badminton team, choir, and volunteers at Huntington Hospital. Tyler also enjoys collecting Funko Pops, Transformers, traveled to France and sung with his choir group at Eiffel Tower, Meaux Cathedral and Vaux Le Vicomte in 2023.
Thomas Zhou achieved the rank of eagle on August 13th, 2024 with Greater Los Angeles Area Council, Rose Bowl District, Troop 359 in San Marino. Thomas began his scouting journey in 2017. He held leadership positions such as historian, instructor, ASPL, and SPL. He has 28 merit badges, 37 camp nights, 46 service hours.
Thomas’s Eagle Project surrounds PazNaz, a local church since it was the church that his family regularly attends. He helped the church clean out two of their storage rooms, while building shelves,installed a LED light, and repainted one of the rooms. His project was a great success as he had received much positive feedback.
Thomas’s favorite scouting experience has to be the Death ValleyCampout in 2019. During this campout, the troop went on a 10-mile hike to explore Death Valley, and at night, they established a new tradition - hot pot for dinner - which they continued when they returned to Death Valley again this year. Outside of scouting, Thomas also plays water polo, goalkeeping for San Marino High School’s varsity team. Recently, he was even recognized as the Rio Hondo league’s MVP goalie and his team’s Coach’s Award.
